On this day in 1945, the trials of prominent Nazis for war crimes began in Nuremberg, Germany. Until then there was no personal liability under international law for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The Nuremberg and Tokyo military tribunals laid the groundwork for the creation of a permanent international criminal court in 1998.
